Land of Salt

Rembang has known as a traditional salt producing area in Central Java. If in the long dry season, the salt production in this territory is increased.Β  But, in the rainy season, they stop to produce the salt. Because the process of crystallization of salt (from seawater), is totally dependent on the sun’s heat.

These are the land of salt in Lasem, when I visited Rembang. Unfortunately I did not come in at harvest time.

    1. Aan, I have the same curiosity as Yvonne…is this the same salt we eat everyday..?
I thought there are few steps in making salt from the sea water, which involved a process of separation of the poisonous chemical elements from the mineral…
I’m not sure myself.. πŸ™‚ hehe

    2. Umm, well, I try to answer as best as I can. But, I’m sorry if there were some mistakes, because honestly I don’t really mastered this.. πŸ™‚
There are two types of salt .. The first salt is through the simple process of evaporation of sea water, so it is referred to as the natural salt with a rougher texture. Here, we call it as kitchen salt.
There are also salt mined from the ground. It has smoother texture so it is easily soluble in water. This kind of salt usually given extra substance so that resembles to the composition of sea water salt.
Salt from both sources was surely fixed through a process of purification or anything that I do not know the name.. πŸ™‚ so it will be safe for human consumption.

      1. Thanks Aan.. I did not see your first reply and that is my fault. It did not show up under notifications or I somehow over looked it.
Thanks for the answer. You wrote very well and I think that maybe you are getting better but maybe you were already writing really good in english. Your photographs are so educational I like your blog very much.

    1. Jalan-jalannya udah dulu Mbak.. Ini tinggal ngambilin stok dari harddisk…
Yang di Sumenep malah ga punya gambarnya, soalnya pas mau motret dibentak pak satpam. Kayaknya dia pacarmu deh.. sengit aku…

  1. Our government spends millions of dollars to make a big plant to take the salt from seawater, there is a new one near where we live. But so that we can have the water to drink and use in our houses. the salt is returned to the ocean.

  2. I am not totally understanding the salt thing. Lady said a big plant was built so that people can have water to drink. Then she wrote that the salt is returned to the ocean. In what context is the salt returned to the sea- waste water or by product?

But for my question. Is the salt that you photographed, for human consumption or is it used for something else?
